About Our Program
The Westfield High School Band Program provides incredible musical experiences through marching band, concert band, percussion, chamber music, jazz band, color guard, and collaborations with choir and theatre.
The Westfield High School Band was founded in 1981 and is a 6A program consisting of 150 members between winds, percussion, and color guard. The Big Red Marching Band is a varsity group that performs at various contests throughout the fall, including UIL and Bands of America competitions and weekly varsity football games. There are currently three concert ensembles in the band program, jazz band, percussion ensemble, and winter guard in the spring.
The band is a consistent University Interscholastic League Sweepstakes winner in the marching arts and concert and sight-reading evaluations.
History
The performing groups at Westfield High School have earned both state and national recognition for their outstanding performances. Since its inception in 1981, Westfield has been at the forefront of marching activity in Texas, consistently pushing the boundaries of what is possible on the field.
The “Big Red Band” has been a shining example of excellence. They were crowned Texas 5A State Champions multiple times, winning in ’87, ’88, ’89, ’96, and ’98, and securing second place in ’86, ’92, and ’94. Their success extended beyond the state level, as they became the first band from Texas to participate in the Bands of America Grand Nationals, winning the championship title in 2003.
The band program at Westfield High School received prestigious accolades from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. They were honored with the Sudler Shield for exceptional performance in the marching band activity and the Sudler Flag for the excellence of the overall band program.
The Westfield Symphonic Band also received recognition from the Texas Music Educators Association, earning the title of State 5A Honor Band in 1989 and 2001, recognizing the exceptional talent of the students and their commitment to excellence.
Westfield High School’s band program’s primary focus is music education. The middle school and high school directors work closely together to ensure a seamless transition and a strong foundation in music education from sixth grade through graduation. The aim is to provide a well-rounded musical experience for all students.
The “Big Red Band” is unique in the students’ hearts. It is a source of pride and enjoyment, as it brings together all three performing bands in the marching band. This is the only time when all band students collaborate and work together. The journey begins in August, often with a significant percentage of new marchers, and culminates in the creation of an award-winning show.
The Westfield “Big Red Band” holds a remarkable record as the only band in Texas to have won the State 5A Marching Championship five times. They have also achieved numerous first-place trophies at the Bands of America Southwest Regional competitions. Their accomplishments extend beyond the state borders, as they secured second place nationwide at the Bands of America Grand Nationals in 1985 and 1990, triumphing in the Best Music category on both occasions.
